Fixing VMware Workstation 6.0 Beta 2 Slowness Problem

If you're a regular user of VMware Workstation to simulate Windows servers (and servers of other operating systems too), you may have noticed an interesting problem associated with the new VMware Workstation 6.0 Beta 2 release that supports Windows Vista.

Its SLLLLOOOOOOW.

Holy crikey, is it ever slow. And, it gives you an error message when you attempt to power it up that tells you why it's so slow.

Read on for the error message and the solution...

The problem is that this beta version has been specifically stunted to force the application into debug mode, which is great if you're debugging your VM's or your VMware software, but terrible if you're trying to use VMware for pretty much any other reason. That debug mode is stuck on and the option to disable it is greyed out in the GUI.

Well, compliments to the 4Sysops blog for this answer, becuase it appears that I'm not the only one having problems.

According to Michael at 4Sysops,

All you have to do is to exchange the bin-debug folder with the bin folder in the directory where you installed VMware Workstation. Rename the bin-debug folder first, for example to bin-debug.back, and then copy the bin folder to bin-debug. When you boot-up a VM you won't get this message anymore, informing you that VMware Workstation runs in debug mode.
