Redmond Desktop Authority Review

The March issue of Redmond Magazine was released on-line this morning, and my review of the Desktop Authority product made it into this issue.

If you're someone who fears scripting, and the idea of hacking the registry scares the bejeezus out of you, their product is pretty cool.

It relies on login scripts, which is both its multi-platform strength as well as its biggest weakness. But, it has one big leg-up over Group Policy in that (like with SMS collections) you can configure a machine or a user with multiple policies. Any of those multiple policies can configure and/or lock down a pretty big set of system configurations.

Full Disclosure: I am also a columnist and contributing editor for Redmond Magazine and Microsoft Certified Professional Magazine on-line. So from time to time I'll be letting you know about neat and nifty pieces over there that I or others may have written. IMHO, the writing over at both Redmond and MCP is top-notch, and I'm not saying that just because I also write for them. So many of us administrators have lost touch with them when MCP Magazine changed their name to Redmond, and I'd love to help regain that lost readership.
