Virtualizing Doesn't Make Backups Go Away
Its true. In fact, virtualization actually makes backups a little more complicated while it makes them easier. You see, even with virtualization, many servers must still have in-the-VM agents to do individual file backups and quiescing of databases prior to backup.
So, you can backup the virtual disk file for many servers, but if the server has any kind of transactional database, today's virtual disk backups won't restore them in a consistent state...
