With Brand New Reading Glasses, Greg Now Feels Officially..."Old"...
{sigh}...
So after six-odd months of unbelievable headaches sitting in front of the computer screen, I finally went today to the eye doctor to get a set of reading glasses. Holy Moses, do they make a difference! Though I will admit that looking over these new spectacles makes me feel older than my 32 years of age would suggest.
I've always had issues with the eyes, starting with my first set of glasses at the ripe old age of 5. In the early years, they were all nearsightedness problems. So back in around 1999, I took the plunge and went under the laser, turning my negative-ten diopters to virtually 20/20 overnight. The doctor admitted after the surgery that this pair were the second worst he'd ever operated on. I found out much later that he lost his license for working on patients that weren't considered "good candidates".
That altered prescription worked incredibly well for nearly 10 years until the last six months. But what's odd about my decision to do Lasik was in the halos, shadows, explosions, and other side-effects that I still see today. Lasik isn't for the faint of heart and definitely not for those with large pupils. You see, if you have large pupils, when the sun sets they dilate to the level (or just beyond the level) of the laser's zone of ablation. When that occurs light gets improperly refracted off that interface between where the eye was lasered and where it wasn't. The result is the what I can only describe as "trippy" patterning effect Lasik patients sometimes get when the sun sets.
For those of you who have wondered about my email address, greggo@hisownlittleworld.com, this address is a reference to how the world for me changes when the sun sets and dilation begins. Everything you've heard about the wild vision issues with Lasik are true. I'm living proof of that.
Fast forwarding to today, these new glasses are a return back to my days as a kid -- but ironically in reverse. While as a kid, I needed glasses to see further than an inch beyond my face, now I need them to see anything close.
I guess what goes around comes around.
