BlueLane Wins "Best of Show" at Interop Last Week. Front Page of Network Computing this Week.

Apparently Network Computing has only ever done four stand-alone feature reviews that made the front page: Vista, Longhorn, VMware, and now BlueLane. Their network threat shielding products continue to win awards.

I've written before on the BlueLane product, because I see it as the first "new" thing in years. You can read my previous review on the product here. We also posted an interview with them here.

The article in Network Computing does a great job of explaining how they deconstruct threats and/or patches to provide an in-line solution:

We were intrigued by the concept of inline patching. When a vendor releases a patch to an OS or application that VirtualShield protects, Blue Lane tears apart and analyzes the patch, deciphering exactly how it changes the OS's behavior to eliminate a vulnerability. The company promises to produce an inline version in less than 24 hours for critical patches and in no more than 72 hours after the original is released for lower-priority patches.

Consider a buffer overflow...

...VirtualShield recognizes there's too much data in an API call and truncates the data, the same way the vendor's patch does. This technique renders network traffic at least as safe as the original patch would have, before it reaches the server. Blue Lane maintains inline patches for server versions of Microsoft Windows; Red Hat Enterprise Linux; SUSE Linux; FreeBSD; MS Exchange and Sendmail; Cyrus and Courier IMAP; MS SQL; the Apache, IIS and iPlanet Web servers; and apps such as Samba, Bind and WuFTPd. The company partners closely with Oracle and VMware, and its physical PatchPoint appliance offers protection for Oracle databases.

One key feature Blue Lane offers: inline patches to protect software, such as Windows NT, for which the vendor is no longer issuing patches. This lets IT run outdated but business-critical apps with fewer security concerns.
