TechEd Announcement: Three New Server 2008 Core Roles

Another announcement last week at TechEd is the addition of three new Server 2008 Core role. Some of these are excellent additions in my book. As you know, when Server 2008 Core is installed, the installation has been highly componentized to allow for greater security and lighter administration. Once the Core O/S is installed, each individual role needs to be installed and enabled for the server to function in that capacity.

The three new roles announced at TechEd for Server 2008 Core are...

...in no particular order:

Internet Information Services
Windows Media Services
(this is not yet confirmed)
Windows Virtualization Services

Although WMS is probably a fairly limited use role for a lot of environments, the other two are going to change the game quite a bit. Being able to install IIS onto what now becomes essentially an appliance will go far in further securing it.

Adding virtualization services means that the hypervisor upgrades (once released) will operate much faster since the window manager components of the full system are not installed.

Watch this space for more info as it gets announced.
