Windows Server 2008 and the Windows Firewall with Advanced Security

Windows Server 2008 will include a nearly identical version of the Windows Firewall with Advanced Security that we're now seeing in Windows Vista. The combination of the firewall with these two products enables a host of new down-at-the-network ACL's you can use to further protect the highly-sensitive data in your network.

Think of this "network ACL" like another mechanism that controls who gets access to what. But, where it comes in particularly handy is in controlling which machines get access to which other machines.

Michael over at 4sysops has a nice early write-up on it...

...that you can access at:

I also give it a little review in Part I in my Redmond Magazine series on server isolation. Even without Vista and Longhorn, you can start down the road of securing your internal connections using this new firewall functionality and Group Policy.
