My PowerSpec x300 WEI Score
Sorry about all the off-topic posts today, but the new machine I bought today is just freakin' cool. If you read through my other post today on my new workstation, this one will really get you interested.
Doing a little research into Vista's "Windows Experience Index" tells me today that a machine can score between 1 and 5.9 on any of the five components: Processor, RAM, Graphics, Gaming Graphics, and Hard Disk. The lowest of any of these constitutes the total score.
When I ran the WEI on this new machine, my total score ended up as 5.2. What's really interesting is that it breaks down like this...
Processor - 5.2 (This is the lowest)
RAM - 5.4
Graphics - 5.9
Gaming graphics - 5.8
Hard disk - 5.9
Three of the five values for my WEI score are right at the maximum possible score! I'm liking this machine more and more.
Here's the spec breakdown:
Processor
Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor E6600
System Board
Asus P5N-E SLI
System Memory
4GB composed of 4- 1024MB DDR2/667 DIMMS

Beat that Alienware!
So, how's your machine's score? If you can beat my 5.2, let me know. I'll post a screen shot of the person with the largest score. And for those who know how to hack their WEI score, you all are disqualified. No cheating!

Sweet!
About the only thing my machine has in common is the video card and the mobo. I'm lacking when it comes to processor and RAM. Alas.
I wonder how Vista computes those scores. I mean, it seems to me that a year or two from now, everyone's going to score 5.9 on everything. Either that, or the score for this particular machine will drop over time, as new stuff comes out.
In other words, is the score relative to whatever BAT is, or will the upper-bound of the score change to reflect BAT?
(BAT = Best Available Technology .. picked up from my Environmental Engineering days, but maybe it's used in other industries?)

Valid point. As the uptick in hardware performance continues due to Moore's Law, will Microsoft reconfigure the WEI scoring algorithm to suit. Likely, one would say "no", as Vista isn't getting harder and harder to run as hardware gets better and better. But, one could see how further granularizing the scoring would help.
I can say, however, that it would definitely irk me if my 5.2 showed up a few years later as a 3.0 -- just because newer machines were on the market.
