Windows Server Virtualization Calculators

Microsoft has released two calculators that help you estimate the costs of virtualizing your servers. Remember that Microsoft's new licensing when it comes to servers changes once you move into virtualization environments.

For Windows Server licenses, when you buy one physical copy of Enterprise Edition...

...you get four free virtual copies of Windows. When you buy a copy of Datacenter Edition, you get unlimited virtual copies. Each of these work only on the same machine.

What's hardest about all of these is figuring out what the breakpoints are so you spend your money wisely. Microsoft's two new calculators help you figure out that information.

According to the site:

Calculator 1 lets you interactively build virtual machines running multiple Microsoft server products to estimate the licenses and costs for Windows Server by edition (Standard, Enterprise and Datacenter) and many Microsoft server products. It starts with configuring your server based on virtualization technology, sockets and clustering requirements, and then builds the virtual machines.

Calculator 2 provides two ways to estimate the number and cost of Windows Server Standard Edition, Enterprise Edition and Datacenter Edition licenses needed for your virtualization scenarios to help you determine the most cost-effective edition of Windows Server.
