WSUS 3.0 SP1 Has Been Released

If you're one of the many who use WSUS 3.0 as your tool for managing patches in your environment, you'll be happy to know that SP1 has been released. You can download a standalone copy of the update here.

This update does the usual bug fixes and includes a set of new features:

- Support for Windows Server 2008
- Support of SQL Server 2008
- New Client Servicing API: support client registration, filter of updates by category and classification, provide applicability rule extension mechanism, obtain package metadata and report update status for each client
- Improvements for local publishing: supports publishing of drivers within the enterprise by using vendor provided catalogs. API include support for bundles and prerequisites.
- All hotfixes: WSUS 3.0 SP1 includes all the changes and hotfixes that have been issued since the release of WSUS 3.0.
- Enhanced bulk approval capability, preserving existing approvals
- Support for separate proxy servers and ports for SSL and non SSL traffic
- Better performance
- Detailed computer reports that can be imported to Excel

I actually just finished writing a book chapter for a well-known author you'll soon find out about on just this version of WSUS. Its a nice upgrade, and with WSUS' recent history of super-easy upgrades probably one that you'll soon want to apply. The enhanced bulk approval and performance upgrades alone are nice enough to warrant the upgrade, if even just to make your life easier in managing the system.

Don't forget that you can always view all kinds of useful info from the prolific WSUS Team Blog at: http://blogs.technet.com/wsus/. These guys run a really great blog and are always very responsive to issues.
