Tools for Stripping the Excess Cr*p out of Vista

Did you know that Vista's footprint is 10x the size of XP? This I didn't realize until this morning!

Windows 7, the replacement for Vista that is slated to arrive late next year, is supposed to be architected with a new way of thinking when it comes to onboard features and functionality. Namely, Windows 7 intends to strip out all the bloatware from the O/S and make those extra pieces optional. This modular approach will reduce the overall footprint for Windows 7, and hopefully go the other direction -- as compared to Vista -- when it comes to hardware requirements.

Until that happens, however, I found a tool this morning...

...called vLite that can be used today on Vista installations to strip out many of its unnecessary bits. According to Information Week, "vLite allows users to preselect numerous Vista features for automatic removal prior to installing the OS on their personal computers. Among them: Windows Media Player, Windows Photo Viewer, MSN Installer, Wallpapers, SlideShow, Windows Mail and other utilities."

vLite permanently removes these pieces, so be sure you're looking to get rid of them before you run the software. You can get a copy of vLite at http://www.vlite.net/
