Free on Free and Faster: Installing VMware Server on Ubuntu 7.10

I run a lot of virtual machines here at the office for evaluation and demo purposes. One tool that I really enjoy for doing this is VMware Server. The product is free, requires very little in the way of minimum hardware resources and merrily plugs and chugs away doing exactly what I need it to.

One thing I have found is that running VMware Server atop a Linux O/S actually runs the virtual machines quite a bit faster than running it atop a Windows O/S. This is because with Linux O/S's I have a much greater capability for disabling essentially everything unnecessary and thereby freeing up resources for my virtual machines.

The hard part for many Windows admins, though, is...

...the unfamiliar interface provided by Linux. When installing Linux without a window manager (which you should do to get the best performance for a server), everything is configured from the command line. The good thing about creating VMware servers for testing, though, is that once you've installed the VMware software it operates much like an appliance. You manage VMware through its client and rarely need to SSH back into the box.

That being said, I found an excellent resource that gives you a step-by-step procedure for installing VMware Server onto Ubuntu 7.10. Following this process to the letter should get you the high-speed VMware Server appliance you need for fast processing of your virtual machines.

Part I of this procedure, which discusses the Ubuntu installation can be found here. Part II with explains the VMware Server installation is located here.
